What a Difference a Day (or two) Makes

Although our weather has been in the 60s and 70s for the last 2 0r 3 weeks, Mr. Weatherman let us know we had snow on the way. Of course, he has been a “bit off” all winter in calling previous storms so it was with a great “ho-hum” that I greeted the chance of this one.
Yesterday turned out to be the calm before the storm. And knowing a “snowstorm” was headed here, I decided to prune back some shrubs and grasses, in order to belay getting crushed under a heavy wet Spring snow. When I was done, I took a few photos just to have in case the promised snowstorm turned out to be real.

When I got up at 8am, there was barely a dusting and the streets were wet. I figured it was another Weatherman faux pas. By 10:30, there was about 6″ on the ground, the wind was whipping things up with gusts to 30mph, and it was about 18 degrees. I can only imagine what the wind chill was!

Although the storm waned for a while around 2, it picked back up again. Checking the NWS animated NEXRAD, the storm appeared to be circling back on itself and creating what looked like a vortex… maybe we entered a blackhole and were set to jettison into deepest space!
The “expected” snowfall by dawn was estimated at 16″. Considering we were at nearly a foot at the time, I imagined that figure wasn’t too far off! Finally, the weatherman was able to predict a storm that actually hit!

I can’t wait for the snow to melt and for the Iris bucharica and tulips to come charging out of the ground in a plethora of colors! You can be assured that there will be posts of those. And after that? All the other irises, fritillarias, and whatever else Spring will bring in the yard!

I can’t wait!
